United Kingdom Extends Methanol Toxicity Advisory Roster with An additional 11 Countries
British Foreign Office has included 11 new nations to its public alert register regarding the dangers of methanol poisoning from adulterated spirits.
The updated warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a global increase in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Just a few weeks ago, officials had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after multiple high-profile events such as the fatal demise of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that as little as small amounts of methanol can lead to blindness or fatality within 12–48 hrs.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous substance often used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for human consumption.
While it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for drinking through the distillation process.
Yet in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to notice.
Authorities' Guidance for Tourists
Foreign Office representative Hamish Falconer emphasized that all travellers should recognize the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"When you are having drinks overseas, opt for well-known venues and avoid unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the official advised.
"In case something seems unusual, like a fatigue that's much more severe than typical or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."
The entire roster of countries listed as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
