{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces dangerous incident with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track right in his path
The dangerous situation occurred on the third lap when safety workers were seen on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his broken nose section
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track track officials can be allowed to just sprint across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was notified that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" commented the governing body
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were informed and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was shown in that area"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired subsequent to that time"
