2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Frogs are far from new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. Yet, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are serious Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming appears especially pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess inherent creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year so far.
Should these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be on the verge of a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
